A 72-year-old substitute teacher told a judge he was having a wardrobe malfunction and not touching himself in front of students inside a high school in Stamford Wednesday morning.

A paraeducator told police she saw a male substitute teacher, who was identified as Michael Luecke, masturbating in the Raynor area at West Hill High School Wednesday morning.

"I believe the bond should stay at $25,000 because the nature of the allegations and that it was during high school hours supposedly masturbating in school," the judge said Thursday.

The paraeducator told police that she thought Luecke was injured. When she went to help him, he had "his hand in his pants and manipulating his penis." The paraeducator screamed as Luecke ran away.

According to video surveillance footage, Luecke was seen "suspiciously manipulating the front of his pants while looking at students in the courtyard." He was supposed to be the substitute teacher for a piano class, police said.

There were six students in the area when Luecke was allegedly performing this lewd act, investigators said.

Resource officers found Luecke overseeing a classroom and he was later arrested by police.

Luecke told them that he had a wardrobe malfunction. When his pants unclipped, he said he had to lay on the floor of the hallway to pull in his stomach to re-clip his pants.

When asked by police why he didn't use the bathroom, he said the floors were dirty.

Police said they watched surveillance footage and actually saw Luecke masturbating in two locations of the school and in one area, he was watching children in a courtyard.

The children seen walking by Luecke in the video were being questioned by police to make sure they did not see anything.

Luecke was charged with public indecency, second-degree breach of peace and risk of injury to a minor.

Following his arraignment at Stamford Superior Court Thursday morning, the judge made Luecke wear a 24-hour monitoring bracelet.

Police said he was released from custody and lives near the school.

Luecke was ordered to stay off all school properties and not go near children. He was also ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and have a competency hearing.

"I have boys and one baby girl, and that's not acceptable," said Katina Williams, a parent.

School officials said background screenings and security checks are done on every substitute teacher before being added to a pool of possible candidates. Luecke has been used for a number of years as a substitute teacher in Stamford and Greenwich.
