Police shot a man in Brooklyn they were pursuing on a felony assault charge, authorities said. The 36-year-old man was shot in the shoulder while fleeing police shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday in Bedford-Stuyvesant, according to the NYPD. Police had a warrant out for the man's arrest and were in the area of Marcy and Vernon Avenues searching for him, NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan said. When the officers spotted the suspect's parked BMW and went to approach it, the driver tried to flee by accelerating onto the sidewalk and "in the direction" of one of the officers, Monahan said. The officer's partner then fired at the driver, who continued to speed away from police, officials said. Police pursued the suspect, identified as Javon Shipman, to the intersection of Tompkins and Gates Avenues, where he was taken into custody.
