One of the reasons a fight with Nick Diaz is so lucrative is because of his larger than life personality and the fact that he is no stranger to controversy. Back in 2010 Jake Shields had just defended his Strikeforce middleweight title belt, beating UFC veteran Dan Henderson in five rounds. But unfortunately for the Strikeforce promoters (and much to the delight of Dana White at the time) the fighting did not end when the bell rang.
As Shields was being interviewed for the national CBS viewing audience, Jason “Mayhem” Miller interrupted him, asking for a rematch. Shields’ teammate, Gilbert Melendez, took offence to Miller stealing Shields’ big moment, and pushed Miller. Current UFC fighters Nick Diaz and his brother, Nate Diaz (who both had a long running beef with Miller) were both seen fighting as CBS announcer Gus Johnson tried to end the fight by yelling, “Gentlemen, we’re on national television.”
