This tragic story is a parent’s worst nightmare. Undoubtedly most parents generally want to do what is best for their child, and that includes the sometimes unhappy task of doling out punishments or correction after a child’s wrongdoing. But did this father take things too far?
A 13-year-old girl in Tacoma, Washington died by suicide last week just days after she was publicly punished on the internet by her father. According to reports, Isabel Laxamana’s father Jeff uploaded a video to YouTube, in which he cut off her hair as punishment. What exactly Isabel was being punished for remains unclear.
Just a few days after the video went online Isabel jumped from a highway overpass, killing herself. Now some people believe the public nature of her punishment may have led to the middle school girl’s death.
The original video is only 15-seconds long, and allegedly shows Isabel’s father cutting off the teen’s hair.
He is heard saying that it was “the consequences of getting mess up, man, you lost all that beautiful hair.”
The easy access and widespread nature of social media has made these types of “shame punishment” videos an increasingly popular trend among parents, but some concerned people believe it constitutes a form of abuse.
