William Jennings has been awarded a $36.6 million verdict for excessive force following a 2010 incident at the Genesee County Jail. According to reports William was arrested for drunk driving, but things got ugly after he arrived at the jail. The Guards allegedly beat him, smashed his face into a wall, and tied him down with a bag over his face. Surveillance cameras captured the events on film.
A verdict so high is unusual in the Eastern District of Michigan, but the court wanted to send a clear message to law enforcement that such force cannot be tolerated.
