The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is praising a jail detention officer for risking her life to save an inmate who was apparently trying to commit suicide.
On the evening of July 1, MCSO says an inmate tried to leap over a railing from the top tier of the jail housing unit.
The fall would have been about 20 feet.
But detention Officer Ramirez managed to the inmate not just once, but twice, each time stopping her from falling.
You can see in the dramatic video that the inmate is actually dangling from the balcony, and the officer is able to pull her to safety.
MCSO says that immediately prior to this incident, the inmate had made suicidal statements to Officer Ramirez.
When her jail cell door was opened to be taken to medical, the inmate made a short run past Officer Ramirez to the railing and tried to jump.
“I want to commend Officer Ramirez for risking her life to save this inmate,” said Sheriff Joe Arpaio. “In a situation like this, both the officer and the inmate were in serious jeopardy of injury or worse.”
Officer Ramirez was injured during the encounter but has returned to work.
